Hoppin’ Frog–Naked Evil BBW

29 May 2011

Here’s an interesting new beer from Hoppin’ Frog Called Naked Evil BBW.  This 22oz bottle is their Deliver Us From Evil barley wine ale before it is aged in oak barrels.   This decidedly naked label looks to be aimed at a limited run of this 11.3% ABV Belgian-style Barley win-style Ale.  Label Text:  “A naked version of our Deliver us from Evil before aging in traditional oak vessels.  Sweet malt flavors will become smoother and rich dark fruit characters will build with time to add a wonderful complexity and depth of flavor.  Fermented with both British and Belgian yeasts for a lightly spicy twist on this old-world beer style.”

Real Ale 15th Anniversary, Asheville Ninja & Boulevard / Deschutes Collaboration No 2

Asheville Brewing Ninja Porter:  Another new label from Asheville Brewing.  Yesterday we brought you Shiva IPA and today we have Ninja Porter (5.6% ABV 12oz….open a CAN of whoop ass!”

Captain Lawrence Brewing Leaving Pleasantville

28 May 2011

From PleasantvilleBriarcliff:  Captain Lawrence Brewing moving from Pleasantville facility to Greenburgh

Lion Brewery Lionshead, Karl Strauss Boardwalk Black Rye, Asheville Shiva IPA

image image
image image

Lion Brewery Lionshead Light and DELUXE PILSNER beer:  Nothing new here to report but the interesting naming…I guess I never noticed that the labeling said Deluxe Pilsner…but I checked back and it’s always said that.

Karl Strauss Boardwalk Black Rye:  One of my favorite San Diego breweries….here’s their Boardwalk Black Rye (22oz 8% ABV) …Boardwalk Black Rye is a spicy black ale with a ‘hop profile that’s pure’ West coast.

Asheville Brewing Shiva IPA:  Here’s the 12oz 6% ABV new package for Shiva IPA…”Shiva will destroy your perceptions of an IPA…”

Buffalo Bill’s Brewery Rye:  Yep…this is the pro wrestling Eric Bischoff…and yes he’s in the beer biz..  Lots of info out there but lets wait and see how it goes.

WILK Friday BeerBuzz Video 27 May 2011) Benny Brewing Summer Ale

27 May 2011

WILK Friday BeerBuzz–27 May 2011 (Benny Brew Co Summer Ale & Amber Lager)

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4We always love having a local brewer join us to sample some of their latest creations.  There’s something special about sampling a beer with it’s brewer, and I always gain some great insight into the beer itself.

Today we welcomed Ben Schoenfeld from Benny Brew Co back to our studio.  Ben joined us last July to sample the very first two beer he released to the public, Hopenstein and Wit, so I thought it would be a great idea to have Ben back to not only share another brew or two with us, but also to talk about how his first year in the brewing business has gone.

BennyBrewLOGOIn honor of Memorial Day and the beginning of summer, we chose to sample Benny Brew Co Summer Ale.  This is a light easy drinking Kolsch-style brew and a classic example of how great a summer beer can be.  As if that wasn’t enough fun, we also sampled Ben’s Amber Lager.  This too is a great easy-drinking beer, but with a heartier body and slightly darker amber color.

While Summer Ale is a draft & growler-only product, Amber Lager can be found at Krugel’s Georgetown Deli & Beer as well as some of our other local beer shops…and of course at Marty’s Blue Room in Nanticoke.  Two great beers to kick off summer, so be sure to sample them for yourself.

to  Ben (enjoy your cruise), Nancy, John, Joe, & Bosco for yet another fun Friday.

Brooklyn Brewing Denied “The Tonic” by TTB–Replaced by “The Concoction”

imageWe brought you news of Brooklyn Brewing Brewmaster’s Reserve The Tonic in early May….but word out of the Brooklyn Brewery Blog that “The Tonic” and “The Penicillin” as they wanted to originally name it were both “problematic” with the TTB.  Enter the new name “The Concoction” and the new release in mid-June.  From Brooklyn:  “Based off a delightful Scotch-based cocktail called The Penicillin and combining peat smoked malt, minced ginger, lemon juice and wildflower honey, this brand new Concoction is just what the doctor ordered

Widmer Brothers–Lemongrass Wheat

Here’s a new brew from our friends at Widmer Brothers Brewing called Lemongrass Wheat Ale (Whet ale brewed with lemongrass and Muscat grape juice with lemongrass added),  This is Widmer Brothers limited release #5 and this 9% ABV 22oz bottled beer should be out in June.

Waldorf Beer Club Stone Tasting Event

Stone14I heard from Lee Burke, and he tells me they have a great event planned for 5/31 with Lee Marin from Stone Brewing…Lee mentioned there would be 10 Stone beers including

Anniversary ale, Old Guardian,

Ruination, Smoked Porter, IPA, Pale Ale Subliminal Self Righteous…Here are the details:

Stone Brewing tasting Tuesday 5/31 at 7 PM
we have 10 different Stone Products and the regional Stone Brewery rep on hand. Also, Pete from Simply Home-brew will be on hand with a display of home brewing supplies
It's outside at the Tiki-Bar and the grill will be open.

You can contact Lee on Facebook  or check out the Waldorf Beer Club on Facebook:   http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=137756942933055

Lagunitas–Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale

Here’s another great version of Lagunitas Brewing series of “Sumpin” beers.  This 8.74% ABV 72.51 IBU brew will use wild yeast and be bottled in 12oz packaging.  I love how every other ingredient on the label is “hops” and I’m really excited to hear that Lagunitas will be bottling this brew the first week of June.

North Coast–Grand Cru

Here’s an exciting new release from North Coast Brewing called Grand Cru.  This beer is brewed with Agave Nectar and aged in bourbon barrels.  Looks like 500ml packaging and a BIG 12.5% ABV.

Stevens Point–Oktoberfest Cans!

It’s always funny to see fall beer packaging being approved in early summer, but I guess this is the approval cycle.  Today we have the Stevens Point Brewery Oktoberfest.  Looks like this 5.6% ABV Marzen style brew will packaged in 12oz in 12oz cans instead of the previous 12oz bottles…still checking the details on that but this looks to be can packaging.  Since Steven’s Point already does

cans for Schlafy & O’Fallon, I suspect this is true.

Breaker Brewing–5 Whistle Wheat NEW!

26 May 2011

I’m excited to report that our pals Chris & Mark @ Breaker Brewing Co have a new beer coming soon called 5 Whistle Wheat.  This looks like a great easy-drinking summer wheat beer and the guys tell me they are doing the first sampling of the brew tonight, so stay tuned for this keg release coming soon.  Chris tells me the 5 Whistle blew in the coal mines to signal the end of the work day when the miners left the mines and likely had a few beers.  5 Whistle Wheat will be an easy drinking 4.9% ABV summer beer.

New Belgium–Lips of Faith Kick Pumpkin ,Clutch & Down Under

Here’s our 2nd New Belgium Brewing Lips of Faith release in the last day or two.  We bought you the keg approval for Clutch yesterday, and today we have the bottle packaging for Kick and Clutch.  Kick is an 8.5% ABV 22oz bottle co-brewed with Dick Cantwell from Elysian Brewing & Kim Jordan from New Belgium.  This is New Belgium’s first pumpkin ale and it looks like Dick is the go-to-guy for pumpkin beers…here’s our story from yesterday for the Stone/Elysian/Bruery pumpkin collaboration ale).  Label text:  “We get a kick out of collaborating. Harvesting the creativity of Kim Jordan of New Belgium & Dick Cantwell of Elysian produced this ruby-hued, slightly sour, pumpkin, cranberry ale. It’s a treat that does the trick. newbelgium.com”
Clutch appears to be an ale brewed for the band Clutch…from the label:  ”Pure rock fury meets Belgian-style brewed folly in this collaboration with Maryland hard-rockers, Clutch. A pronounced bass line of dark chocolate, coffee and black malts bridge the sourness of our dark wood ale for a fluid riff. newbelgium.com”

imageimageAs a bonus, here’s the 22oz Trippel packaging and keg approval for New Belgium Down Under IPA ale brewed with passion fruit juice….and the interesting part is that it is listed as “Brewed in Seattle, Washington.”

Southern Tier 215 Pale, Evolution Brewing Spring Migration, Widmer Nelson Imperial IPA, 7 Wolaver’s Pumpkin Ale

image image
image image

Southern Tier Brewing 215 Pale Ale:  Here’s the keg-only specialty brew 215 Pale Ale.  This beer is brewed for Philly Beer Week and comes in at 6% ABV….and of course 215 is the Philly telephone area code.

Evolution Brewing Spring Migration Ale Aged in Rum Barrels:  This is the keg version of Spring Migration but according to the Evolution blog, they’ve already bottled this golden strong ale (Bottle labels here) and they are brewing the fall migration as we speak (Trappist ale aged in Chardonnay barrels).

Widmer Brothers Nelson Imperial IPA:  We showed you the 12oz version of this packaging, and today we have the 22oz packaging.

Wolaver’s Pumpkin Ale:  This looks to be the new packaging for Pumpkin Ale and not the original Will Steven’s Pumpkin Ale.  This is a 12oz bottle package for this beer brewed with Organic Vermont pumpkins.

Lion Brewery Stegmaier–NEW Pumpkin Ale !

25 May 2011

I’m excited to be the first to show you the new packaging for Lion Brewery Stegmaier Pumpkin Ale (ale brewed with pumpkin and spices)…the first new brew to come out of the Stegmaier line in over a year.  We’ve been showing you the new Stegmaier packaging, but this is an actual new beer.  Looks like it will be packaged in 12oz bottles and come in at 5.5% ABV.

Friday BeerBuzz–The Teaser–27 May 2011

WILKFridayBeerbuzz4Last week we sampled some great Anderson Valley Brewing Hop Ottin’ IPA, and tried our best to speak Boontling…although I will admit the beer is much better that our Boontling.  This is a classic west-coast-IPA meets British-IPA and definitely one to sample for yourself.

So what will we be sampling this week?  Hint:  This week’s brews and brewmaster has joined us before with his very first brew, so he’s making the ride again to wish us a Happy Summer.

Tune in at 8:30AM and see what beer we sample on the Friday BeerBuzz on WILK…bringing good beers and good people together.  (103.1FM or wilknewsradio.com).

Port Brewing–La Cruda Porter

Here’s your first peek at the new Port Brewing La Cruda Porter.  This 6.7% ABV brew was brewed by Tomme Arthur, Troy Hojel and Skip Virgilio to commemorate home brewing and their Makanudo Porter from the startup San Diego brewery Cerveccerias La Cruda where Tomme & Troy got their start in 1996.  Makanudo Porter was one of the few San Diego area brews to win a GABF medal at that time.  This brew will be packaged in 22oz bottles and carries the logos of White Labs Yeast,Hop Union, Country Malt Group and Brewcraft USA.

Label Text:  “In 1996 a little brewpub named Cerveccerias La Cruda opened in downtown San Diego.  While open for less than a year, the beers were nothing short of remarkable, and that fall brewer Troy Hojel and his assistant Tomme Arthur won the Gold Medal for robust porters at the GABF.  Their Makanudo Porter was only the third San Diego beer to earn a GABF medal.  2011 San Diego is now the epicenter of Craft Brewing and our homebrewing community thrives like never before.  This past April, Troy Hojel, Skip Virgilio and Tomme Arthur, each a homebrewer who followed their dreams and turned pro, reunited for the first time in 15 years and recreated that legendary La Cruda Porter.  Their hope was to send a message in a bottle out to homebrewers everywhere.  Never stop daring, never stop experimenting, and most of all never stop imagining the places beer can take us all.”

Cigar City Brewing–Good Gourd, Guava Grove & Imperial Milk Porter

Today we have the updated packaging for Cigar City Brewing Good Gourd imperial pumpkin ale.  This 8.5% ABV “ale brewed with pumpkin and with spices added” will be packaged in 750ml bottles….”This high gravity gob of gourd-y goodness incorporated pumpkin in the mashing process and then gets wicked with the spices including Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican all-spice, Zanzibar cloves and nutmeg.”
As a bonus I’ve also included the new 750ml packaging for Guava Grove ale brewed with guava.  This is also a packaging update for this existing 8% ABV farmhouse ale,,,”Guava Grove is a farmhouse ale that sees a secondary fermentation on one of Tampa’s flavored fruits, guava…”
and the Imperial Milk Porter new packaging as well…This is a NEW 750ml brew we announced on May 6th…”So what we have here is a high gravity porter brewed with lactose and aged in whiskey barrels.  It tastes like catching your favorite song on the radio station with hints of the parking meter expiring, but not getting a ticket.  It’s good….aged in Stranahan Whiskey Barrels

Stillwater Artisanal / Brewers Art–Debutante American Farmhouse Ale

imageEarlier this week I brought you the keg packaging for the Stillwater Artisanal (aka Dog Brewing) / Brewers Art co-brew Debutante…8% ABV brewed with “Spell & Rye, accented  with a blend of Heather, Honeysuckle and Hyssop.”…and today we have the 750ml bottle package for this ale brewed with spices….”It is my pleasure to present a

collaboration with The Brewer’s Art. A Baltimore institution that helped to pioneer the Belgian beer movement in the States. Brewed with a combination of Spelt & Rye, accented with a blend of Heather, Honeysuckle and Hyssop. The result is a rustic farmhouse ale displaying earthy tones and floral characteristics while maintaining intricate balance.”

AND it’s another cool label design by Lee Verzosa

T-2: Hershey Brewery Update
The construction phase for the new brewery is nearly complete. On a quick drive-by you can now see the main entrance of the brewery from the roadway on Hershey Park Drive. Equipment starts arriving in early July and we are still on schedule for a mid-fall opening. Check out regular updates on the project via the link on the Tröegs homepage at www.troegs.com.

The Return of Starsan
Starsan, the Tröegs Brewery band, is shaking off the cobwebs for a show at the Stage on Herr at HMAC on Friday, June 10. The Starsan Quartet will be joined by The Chill Haze Horns for a night of original tunes and deep covers focused around drinking songs (our favorite topic)!
We will tap a firkin at 8 p.m. and Starsan takes the stage at 9 p.m. Our good friends Up Pops the Devil will do an after-set (as their fans are younger and stay out later!) to close out the evening.
There is a $5 admission and doors open at 7 p.m. HMAC is located at 216 Herr Street in the midtown Harrisburg.

ISO: Tröegs Ticket and Classic Sunshine Pils Labels!
Starting this week an extremely limited number of Sunshine Pils cases will find their way into Greater Central Pennsylvania. The purchaser of these cases will have the opportunity to be one of the first people to see the new Tröegs Brewery in Hershey when we open in the fall 2011.

So how do you know if you bought the special case? There are no markings on the outside of the case but once you open it two things will make the case special – there will be an envelope taped to the lid of case containing a Troegs Ticket and every bottle in the case will adorn the original Sunshine Pils logo.

If you get one of these special cases, read the Tröegs Ticket, follow the directions and keep one of those special bottles, as you will need it, along with the ticket, to get a special behind-the-scenes tour of the brewery this fall from the Tröegs brothers.

Gift Shop and Tasting Room News
We’re putting the Scratch Series on hiatus for part of the summer since we need the fermenter space to keep up with year-round beers. We will try to tempt your taste buds with special kegs from time to time until the Scratch Beers return.
In Gift Shop news we have new Sunshine Pils t-shirt designs available. If you need that special gift for your four-legged friends, be sure to check out the Tröegs dog collar with handy bottle opener attached!

Finally, we just received a large shipment of work shirts, and we will be unveiling new logos and names for your enjoyment. Look for Tröegs Work Shirts at beer festivals and in the brewery Gift Shop for the $10 nice price.

Harrisburg Brewers Fest Update

Saturday, June 18, with two sessions: 12-3:30 p.m. and 5-8:30 p.m.

Both sessions are COMPLETELY SOLD OUT.

Stone Brewing / Troegs–Chocolate Cherry Stout 3rd Label

imageWe brought you the breaking news of the new Stone Brewing and Troegs Brewing co-brewed Chocolate Cherry Stout and showed you the first two label backings with inscriptions from John Trogner and Jason Field/Kevin Shepard…so I thought you’d want to see the 3rd label back with inscription by Mitch Steele from Stone.

Beer Irony: Harmon KillerBrew

In an odd Ironic twist, Harmon Brewing (Tacoma, WA) today received approval for their KillerBrew Imperial Red Ale (7.6% ABV 22oz) with an obvious nod to Minnesota Twins slugger Harmon Killebrew on the label.  Unfortunately Harmon Killebrew just died on May 17th.  Should be interesting to see if the beer gets released or re-named…..so stay tuned.

Cricket Hill Brewing
Hopnotic:  This odd new 12oz bottle packaging replaces the traditional black label for Hopnotic IPA.  This looks to be a foiled or reflective package that didn’t handle the TTB scanners very well so stay tuned for what this one may actually look like.

Summit Brewing Unchained Series Honeymoon Saison (Batch 7):

Here’s Sam’s new Saison brewed with Honey.  Look for this one to come in just over 5% ABV and be released in mud-July

Fegley’s Brew Works News!

BrewWorksLogo_1_high_res-01From Mike:
Just in time for Memorial Day weekend and the official start of the Summer season-
on Friday, May 27th, we will release our Hefeweizen at the Allentown Brew Works and at the Bethlehem Brew Works.
Brewmaster Beau Baden shows his expertise with this one, as he is known for this German style wheat beer!
His first employment was as a brewer at Pyramid Breweries where he won the GABF Gold medal for Hefeweizen in 2001. Pyramid still proudly remarks that the beer is “the standard by which all other wheat beers are judged.”
The Hefeweizen comes in at 5.2%abv, and pairs excellently with the PA Dutch section of our menu, and with salads, poultry, or light fish dishes.

Burrito Works (next to the Allentown Brew Works on Hamilton Street) now offers an extensive list of beer (AVAILABLE TO-GO too!).
Filling the need for a great downtown "six-pack shop" and becoming the ONLY burrito place in the Valley that serves beers to go along with burritos and tacos made with all natural, sustainable, organic meats and produce. Tap lines are in – Knuckleball, Fegley’s Lager, and Hop Explosion are on draft now! Plus we’ve got bottled beers to go from around the world. Grab just one, two, or a coupla’ sixes!
VIEW THE BEER LIST HERE http://www.thebrewworks.com/news/burrito-works-announces-the-beer-to-go-list/

We make it easy to enjoy the finest beverages with the freshest burritos!
And Burritos are only $5 After 5pm!

Coming up on June 1st is the summer release of Blueberry Belch! With all-new label art for the 12oz bottles, six-packs, and cases. T-shirts will also be available any day! Visit us in Allentown or Bethlehem, and find it at fine distributors and pubs in PA and NJ.
