30 June 2016
Some beers just scream “summer”…and whether it’s late June or early September, the right beer at the right time makes it all that much better. It’s 83-degrees on my deck, the sun is high in the sky and the beer in my hand is a Flat12 Bierwerks Cucumber Kolsch.
If you’re unfamiliar, Flat12 opened in 2010 in the Holy Cross neighborhood of Indianapolis, IN. Founded by Sean O’Connor, the brewery uses a 20bbl DME brewhouse and they distribute across Indiana, the greater Cincinnati area, and Louisville; with a 2nd location opened in Jeffersonville, IN.
With my love of all things motorsports, Flat12 hit my radar when they release Hinchtown Hammerdown in support of Indy car driver James Hinchcliffe. You may be more familiar with their Half Cycle IPA, Walkabout Pale, Pogue’s Run Porter and Upside Down Blonde…but lets get back to summer.
Today we’re sampling 12oz cans of Flat12 Cucumber Kolsch and right out of the can you can’t help but notice the deep gold color of this beer. Cucumber Kolsch has light malt aromas imparted by the pilsner malt, but as I mentioned earlier, the taste just says “summer.” Cucumber Kolsch has a soft drinkable palate with a burst of cucumber freshness. This German-style Kolsch uses cold fermentation and you won’t miss it’s contribution to the clean refreshing finish. I really liked how the cucumber added a bright burst of flavor to the beer and at 5.2%-AbV, you can really drink a lot of Cucumber Kolsch. At 28 IBU the sweet/bitter balance is nice and overall this beer is really (really) drinkable.
Flat12 Bierwerks Cucumber Kolsch is their summer seasonal and it is available in 12oz cans now so don’t delay. I also have to mention the REALLY cool Flat12 Cucumber Kolsch-branded foam cucumber they sent along…it looks real enough to eat (but don’t eat it)!
Be sure to try Flat12 Cucumber Kolsch for yourself, and when you do, be sure to let us know what YOU think.
