announced today that it is expanding with two new production facilities slated to open in 2016. The growth is part of a long-term plan to maintain quality and freshness standards, with current roots at 1 Executive Way, Napa, CA, at the intersection of Highways 29 and 12, commonly referred to as the “gateway to Napa Valley.”
According to Mike Forte, Director of Operations for Napa Smith, the new California brewery is expected to open by the end of 2016 at 101 Yolano Dr. in Vallejo, CA. Napa Smith has also entered into a cooperative partnership with Turtle Anarchy Brewing Company targeting production for July 2016 at 5901 California Avenue, Nashville, TN. The two new facilities are Napa Smith’s first breweries outside of Napa. R.S. Lipman Company, the parent company of Napa Smith, says current production is maxed out, substantiating the need for growth.
Through its collaboration with Turtle Anarchy Brewing Company and Hap & Harry’s Tennessee Beers, Napa Smith Brewery will become the smallest independent bicoastal operation in North America producing kegs, cans and bottles for national and international distribution.
Napa Smith is among a handful of U.S. craft brewers, including Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Stone Brewing Co., and New Belgium Brewing Co., expanding in a major play for national and international business. The Vallejo and Nashville facilities will more than double capacity, giving Napa Smith the ability to reach all 50 U.S. states and multiple countries.
The new breweries will offer the full line of Napa Smith’s core beers, developed by iconic master brewer Don Barkley. Both new breweries will also offer taproom-only specialties based on seasonality and brewers’ innovations.
Barkley, America’s most veteran craft brewer, started making craft beer in 1978 at New Albion Brewery, America’s first new craft brewery since Prohibition. As one of the founders of Mendocino Brewing Company, Barkley achieved icon status during his 25-year tenure there, where he helped spearhead the craft beer movement. Barkley continued his craft brewing legacy throughout Northern California including Sonoma, Napa and now Solano. His impact on the world of craft beer is expanding east in 2016, when he will help lead Napa Smith’s collaboration with Turtle Anarchy to create benchmark styles of Napa Smith beers in the new Nashville-based co-operative. Barkley is sharing his experience with brewing teams, led by Stein Servick (Napa Smith) and Andrew Kamp (Turtle Anarchy), to ensure production of his recipes well into the future.
“It’s exciting to see the explosion of craft beer across the United States,” says Barkley. “Working with other brewers to expand and promote good beer is a joy. There aren’t too many careers that span 40 years and culminate in this fashion. I feel very fortunate to be a part of Napa Smith’s plans for expansion.”
Upland Brewing has been doing lot of exciting things lately…..from their revival of Champagne Velvet to their new Wood Shop sour program, the beers just keep getting better and better.
Today we had a chance to sample the latest version of one of my all time favorite Upland Brewing beer names, Marion The Agrarian. As Upland puts it, “
Marion the Agrarian isn’t quite your typical farmer, and the beer we named after her isn’t quite your typical Farmhouse Ale, either.” Marion The Agrarian uses locally-sourced honey as well as a dry-hopping with Mandarina Bavaria and Mosaic hops…and it has some really unique flavors going on that we really enjoyed.
We found the aroma to be all about hops with some piney and spicy notes and maybe a touch of grapefruit. The flavors were citrusy (mostly grapefruit) with some additional dull sweetness from the honey to balance it out nicely. This beer was really drinkable and refreshing with an almost dry spiciness at the end that we really liked.

This is Mélange No 14 from The Bruery in Placentia, CA. This 14th release in the Mélange series is 85% ale aged in Bourbon barrels and 15% imperial stout. You’re looking at the 750ml bottle and this 2016 Mélange will hit 13.4%-AbV.

Hilliard Ave. Almost one year ago, Hi-Wire Brewing transitioned their downtown Asheville
brewery into a sour and wild ale facility, with a small portion of production dedicated to
producing a different line of limited speciality beers which they are calling the Single Barrel
Series. All Single Barrel Series releases are small batches fermented 100% in oak barrels with
mixed yeast cultures, bottle conditioned with brettanomyces, and sold in cork and caged 750ml
Batch #3 is a 4.7% ABV Oak Fermented Berliner Weisse with Brettanomyces. This wheat ale
was first soured with lactobacillus in the kettle before undergoing fermentation in a white wine
barrel with German ale yeast and bottle conditioned with brettanomyces. This berliner weisse
maintains the traditional character of the style, while oak fermentation & brett adds depth and
complexity to this light, tart wheat beer. Bottles will be $15 each, limit 6 bottles per person.
Batch #4is a 5.5% ABV Oak Fermented Tart Saison w/ Passion Fruit & Brettanomyces. This
tart saison was first soured with lactobacillus in the kettle before undergoing a mixed
fermentation in a red wine barrel on passion fruit. Dank tropical notes of passion fruit blend with
subtle brett funk & earthy oak character in this vibrant, refreshingly tart beer. Bottles will be $18
each, limit 4 per person.
Production of these beers are limited to 120 bottles each and will not see distribution. With their
sour program fully under way, Hi-Wire is eager to bring unique and experimental single batches
to the market. Join them at noon on June 11 to get your hands on these special, limited beers.
Here’s the latest packaging for Lost Abbey Brett Devo Tenth Anniversary Edition. This beer celebrates the “harmonious coexistence” of brettanomyces and hops and every batch is dry-hopped. This is the 750ml bottle and the beer hits 6.8%-AbV.
This is Horti-Glory from Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville, NC. This beer is a farmhouse all brewed with flowers (elderflowers, sumac & honeysuckle) and fermented with brettanomyces. This beer also uses Riverbend Malt and it is package din 500ml bottles. Look for Horti-Glory to hit 6.9%-AbV.
This is River Fest Pale Ale from Crazy Mountain in Vail Valley, CO. This beer is being brewed for the 7th annual Colorado Riverfest (June 18th 2016) and the beer will float in at 5.7%-AbV. This looks to be a 12oz can but stay tuned on that one.

Every Tuesday at 6pm, the Cascade Brewing Barrel House taps a new live barrel of a usually short-lived, one-off beer. This week's live barrel is Ingmeyer Bergman, a collaboration blend withPhantom Carriage. This limited release is a 50/50 blend of our bourbon barrel-aged sour quad with Meyer lemon zest and Phantom Carriage’s Bergman sour blond ale. Flavors of bourbon and lemon are met with a brisk acidity, mild sweetness and a touch of brett funk. The Goliath Experimental Double IPA was crafted to mimic key features of the Goliath video game, which encourages players to experiment with their gameplay style in order to build new and more powerful giant robots. Goliath Experimental Double IPA was brewed with new several hop varietals to create a big, bold flavor, including Citra, Simcoe, Amarillo and Mosaic hops, as well as Dangerous Man’s first-ever usage of the new TNT hop.
- Appearance: Rich gold, bordering on copper.
- Aroma: Rich tropical overtones followed by stone fruits and finishing notes of citrus.
- Flavor: Dominant notes of tropical fruit, with currents of stone fruits and citrus. The sturdy malt backbone provides a delicate counterpoint to the massive hop-forward presentation, which is both bracing and smooth.

The fee for American Solera Society membership is $300 plus tax. Membership and its benefits begin on August 25, 2016 and expire on August 25, 2017. Membership fee is non-refundable.
Members will receive a total of 20 bottles of beer over the course of the year. We expect to offer 10 different brands, although we cannot guarantee the exact structure of releases. In the case of an overage the opportunity to purchase additional bottles will be offered to members prior to the general public.
Members will enjoy a 10% discount on all draft beer (excludes crowlers, growlers and bottles), merchandise, and food purchases made at the tasting room with valid membership card. Membership renewal fees are excluded from the discount.
Members will receive a pair of exclusive American Solera Society glasses. Glassware will be available for pick-up at the tasting room.
Members will receive a membership card to include their name, membership number, and proxy name (if applicable). Membership card must be presented at the time of beer pick-up or in order to receive applicable discounts.

OK Brian…I definitely want to try this one. Here’s your first peek at Stillwater Artisanal Whole-icious and it is a wild sour mango IPA. This beer will slice in at 6.5%-AbV and it is packaged in 22oz bottles at Crazy Mountain. This beer will be released exclusively at Whole Foods in Sept.
We are very excited to announce our first overseas collaboration beer with @StoneBrewingCo. The collaboration brew is a Sujeonggwa Red Ale similar to the traditional Korean dessert punch. This beer has a cinnamon aroma and taste, backed up by dried fruit from the persimmons, and finishes with a hint of spiciness from the ginger.
I couldn’t resist these names. Coming to us from Tipping Point Brewing in Waynesville, NC, today we have two IPAs. Slap On The Wrist is a session IPA that hits 4.9%-AbV and Punch In The Face is an IPA that hits 6.8%-AbV. These are both 32oz bottles.

Today you get your first look at two new cans coming from Birdsong Brewing in Charlotte, NC. Fake Plastic Trees is a hoppy wheat ale that uses Columbus, Cascade & Sorachi Ace hops (6.4%-AbV)…and Doin’ Thyme is a witbier brewed with fresh thyme, coriander and lemon peel (4.3%-AbV). These are both 16oz cans.
After 18 months of brewing, aging and countless tastings, the time has come to begin transitioning away from The Propagation Series with the release of Fortune Favors the Funk, a ‘Lambic inspired’ ale.
Fortune Favors the Funk is a unique collaboration with our talented friends from Sierra Nevada. Together, we spent an afternoon tasting and blending to create a beer that showcases our love of wild flavors and balanced acidity. The final beer was created using Beachwood Blendery’s ‘Lambic inspired’ barrels and an experimental hop Sierra Nevada provided, known as ex-598.
Fortune Favors the Funk was brewed with traditional lambic ingredients; pilsner malt, unmalted wheat and aged hops boiled for three hours. The base beer was fermented in neutral oak barrels and aged for almost a year. After blending, the beer was dry hopped with ex-598 hops, bottled with wine yeast, and allowed to condition for over two months. Fortune Favors the Funk has a classic rustic profile balanced with solid acidity, full body, and clean finish.

Here’s your very first look at the 2016 version of Avery The Beast Grand Cru Oak Aged Ale. This ale is brewed with dates, maple syrup and alfalfa honey as well as Magnum, Galena, Saaz, Hallertau, Tettnang and Hersbrucher hops. If that’s not enough, The Beast also uses Muscovado sugar, turbinado sugar and dark Belgian candy sugar as well as oak chips and “a hellion of a Belgian yeast strain.” This version hits 14.6%-AbV and for 2016, this beer will be packaged in 12oz bottles. Look for an Aug release for this beer (Batch No 14) and it will be limited to 750 cases.
Here’s your very first look at a new can coming this fall from Harpoon. This is Flannel Friday and it is a “hoppy, malty, crisp” amber ale. This seasonal release will hit 5.7%-AbV and 35 IBU and you’re looking at the 12oz Ball can (12oz bottles and keg below).
Today we get a peek at some updates coming for The Lost Abbey Ten Commandments. This packaging changes “10” to “Ten” and it is now labeled as a dark spiced farmhouse ale with brettanomyces. This is a 750ml bottle and this version will only hit 10%-AbV, down from the previous 12%. Stay tuned for more details.
Here’s the latest packaging coming from Ninkasi for their Hop Cooler. This Citrus IPA has dropped the “Special Release” packaging label so it looks like we’ll see more of it. This beer will remain at 7.2%-AbV and 74 IBU and you’re looking at the 12oz and 22oz (below) bottles.
This 32oz resealable Crowler will likly be available in late 2016 from Oskar Blues & Ball Corp.
Here’s a new bottle coming from Elevation Beer in Poncha Springs, CO. This is Wave Wheel Wit and it is a Belgian-style wheat ale brewed with orange peel, coriander and Citra hops. This is a 12oz bottle and the beer hits 4.6%-AbV and 20 IBU.
FORT COLLINS, CO (May 27, 2016) – Funkwerks, the award-winning Saison-focused brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, was recognized this year at World Beer Cup for its Belgian-style Golden Strong Ale named Deceit. The World Beer Cup is a biannual competition hosted by the Brewers Association to celebrate the art and science of brewing and is regarded as the most prestigious beer competition in the world.
Deceit took home a Bronze medal this year in the category for Belgian-Style Pale Strong against 48 entrants. This award is the third for Deceit, aptly named for this deceptively palatable 8.5% alcohol by volume beer. Funkwerks' unique Belgian yeast strain masks Deceit's high alcohol content with flavors of pineapple, pear, citrus and a slight spice. Deceit boasts a Gold Medal from the Great American Beer Festival® in 2012 as well as a Silver Medal from the 2014 World Beer Cup.
World Beer Cup judges award medals based on blind tastings of all beers in each category. “It is an honor to take home this award from World Beer Cup. We're humbly proud of Deceit, which has become our most decorated beer to date,” said Gordon Schuck, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner and Head Brewer. “I'm pleased that this beer continues to stand out year over year amongst other renditions of the style.”
This year, 253 judges reviewed 6,596 beers from 1,907 breweries in 96 different categories. Of those which took home awards, 37 medals were brought back to Funkwerks' home state of Colorado. “It's an exciting time to be brewing beer in Colorado and we're pleased to be recognized amongst so many innovative breweries in our state,” said Brad Lincoln, Funkwerks Co-Founder/Owner.
Deceit can be found in bars, restaurants and liquor stores across Colorado, Arizona, Iowa and Northern Texas. Bottles of Deceit are also available in the Funkwerks taproom, where a barrel-aged version of the beer can be sampled.
Looks like Great Lakes may be creating a Prince tribute beer. It’s only a keg label but this is Purple Grain….ale brewed with blueberries. Stay tuned for more.

Back in Nov, Saranac announced this beer would be discontinued, but based on this new approval, I suspect we may see it return in some format. This is Saranac Black Forest black beer (5.3%-AbV, 20 IBU). We also have the packaging for Kellerbier (5.5%-AbV, 40 IBU), Octoberfest (5.4%-AbV, 20 IBU), Marzen Fest (6%-AbV, 22 IBU) & Pumpkin Ale (5.3%-AbV, 18 IBU). These are all 12oz bottles (and cans).
